Krasnoyarsk

"On the quay a small fleet of minivans stands by for those passengers who are impatient to reach Predposylov. No, we are not many, we are pitifully few. The Gulag tour, the purser told me with an indulgent shrug, always lost money; and then he mimed a yawn. Similarly, on the flight from the capital to my point of embarkation I quite clearly heard a stewardess refer to me (she and a collegue were remixing my drink) as 'the Gulag bore in 2B'. It is nice to know that this insousiance about Russian slavery - abolished, it is true, as long ago as 1987- has filtered down to the caste of tourism. I let the stewardess get away with it. Start a ruckus on a plane these days and you get fifteen bullets in the head. But the indulgent purser (much shaken, much enriched) now knows that here is one who still swears and weeps, that here is one who still hates and burns."

PopMatters

" "What's astronaut food?
"You know, stuff in little packets that you keep lying on the shelf. Everyone has some lying around. The people you imagine you might be with but you know you never really will be. The people who if you're in a couple but you're a little bored or restless you meet them for coffee a lot and the other half of your couple isn't really thrilled about it. Or if you're single, they're the people you're keeping on a mental list just so you don't feel like there aren't any possibilities. Friends who are almost more than friends but really, they're just friends. Astronaut food, bombshelter provisions. If you were ever going to have anything with them it would have happened already. Sometimes you even fall in bed with them, but it doesn't count for much. It's always a mistake to try to get any nourishment out of that stuff. But not a big mistake. That's the beautiful part, how the stakes are so low."
"Only if everyone agrees that they're mutual astronaut food."
"Oh, absolutely. You can screw up your astronaut food a million ways. Even just letting them know. Though they sense it at a certain level, nobody wants to be told. The worst is when someone falls in love and then gets all self-righteous about breaking up with their astronaut food, as if there's anything to break up about." "

"Anthropology is full of pain. First, there is the pain of the fieldwork researcher. This is an odd pain for his or her suffering is taken as a measure of the value of their work. Anthropologists have been beaten and scarified, circumcised and starved, spat on and rubbed in excrement, all in the name of getting inside the skin of local people, understanding the way they think and feel. Pain is the ultimate proof of seriousness of purpose, of sympathy and empathy, the absolute core of the participant observation that is virtually the only intellectual capital of the subject. It is assumed that people who go to Africa or Asia to study exotic cultures must feel pain as the ultimate «being there». You just know that any anthropologist worth the name who was working on Christianity would absolutely insist on being nailed to a cross."
