"Si las fotografías permiten la posesión imaginaria de un pasado irreal también ayudan a tomar posesión de un espacio donde la gente está insegura. Así, la fotografía se desarrolla en conjunción con una de las actividades modernas más características: el turismo. Por primera vez en la historia, grupos numerosos de gentes abandonan sus entornos habituales por breves preríodos. Parece decididamente anormal viajar por placer sin llevar una cámara. Las fotografías son la prueba irrecusable de que se hizo la excursión, se cumplió el programa, se gozó del viaje. Las fotografías documentan secuencias de consumo realizadas en ausencia de la familia, los amigos, los vecinos. Pero la dependencia de la cámara, en cuanto aparato que da realidad a las experiencias, no disminuye cuando la gente viaja más. El acto de fotografiar satisface las mismas necesidades para los cosmopolitas que acumulan trofeos fotográficos de su excursión por el Nilo o sus catorce días en China, que para los turistas de clase media que hacen instantáneas de la Torre Eiffel o las cataratas del Niágara.

El acto fotográfico, un modo de certificar la experiencia, es también un modo de rechazarla: cuando se confina a la búsqueda de lo fotogénico, cuando se convierte la experiencia en una imagen, un recuerdo. El viaje se transforma en una estrategia para acumular fotos. La propia actividad fotográfica es tranquilizadora, y mitiga esa desorientación general que se suele agudizar con los viajes. La mayoría de los turistas se sienten obligados a poner la cámara entre ellos y toda cosa destacable que les sale al paso. Al no saber cómo reaccionar, hacen una foto. Así la experiencia cobra forma: alto, una fotografía, adelante."

- Think about the opening scenes of The Bicycle Thief. The hero is given a job, but he won't be able to take it unless he gets his bicycle out of hock. He goes home feeling sorry for himself. And there's his wife outside the building, lugging two buckets of water. All their poverty, all the struggles of this woman and his family are contained in those buckets. The husband is so wrapped up in his own troubles, he doesn't bother to help her until they're halfway of the door. And even then, he only takes one of the buckets, leaving her to carry the other. Everything we need to know about their marriage is given to us in those few seconds. Then they climb the stairs to their apartament, and the wife comes up with the idea to pawn their bed linens so they can redeem the bicycle. Remember how violently she kicks the bucket in the kitchen, remember how violently she opens the bureau drawer. Inanimate objects, human emotions. The wife sells the sheets, and after that we see one of the workers carry their little bundle to the shelves where pawned items are stored. At first, the shelves don't seem very high, but then the camera pulls back, and as the man starts climbing up, we see that they go on and on, all the way to the ceiling, and every shelf and cubby is crammed full of bundles identical to the one the man is now putting away and all of a sudden it looks as if every family in Rome has sold their bed linnens, that the entire city is in the same miserable state as the hero and his wife. In one shot, Grandpa. In one shot we're given a picture of a whole society living at the edge of disaster."

Two weeks before the presidential election you can now do something useful with your tasteless gum and stick it on the face of the political candidate, who you don’t wanna see in the White House for the next four years. So far more than 50 posters are taped in busy hot spots all over New York City which shouldn’t only make the city a bit cleaner but also give a preview on how New Yorkers will vote on the 04th of November. ¿Por qué hacia el final el autor se había desviado del patrón? Y otra pregunta igual de interesante: ¿por qué lo había seguido hasta el desenlace?

Lo que yo había leído no daba la impresión de que él hubiera tenido delante páginas en blanco y la Odisea al lado y se hubiera dedicado a trasladar sin un ápice de imaginación aventura tras aventura del mundo de la leyenda al mundo de Karl. Más bien parecía un juego. Alguien tenía que escribir una historia, contar una historia de soldados que regresan de la guerra, conocía el argot, conocía la Odisea y no se complicó la vida. No se tomó la molestia de investigar la vegetación de Siberia, sus regiones y fronteras. Le daba igual que en dicho país los ríos no fluyeran hacia el sur, sino hacia el norte. Sabía que en Siberia hay tundra, bosques y ríos, que hacia el sur se torna calurosa y seca y que allí limita con otros países. ¡Para qué importunar al lector con los nombres!

Además, ¿deseamos saberlo con exactitud? Pensé en un viejo amigo que sabe denominar e interpretar las estrellas y constelaciones como nadie. Se lo inventa todo, pero aunque uno lo sepa, es un placer escucharle. ¿Es porque con los nombres verdaderos no haríamos mucho más que con los falsos? ¿Porque sólo se trata de familiarizarnos con el formidable resplandor del cielo estrellado mediante la designación y la interpretación?
