Two Silver Trees

Carried To Dust - Calexico

As the weird world rolls on

"- Inanimate objects, she said.
- What about them? I asked.
- Inanimate objects as a means of expressing human emotions. That's the language of film. Only good directors understand how to do it, but Renoir, De Sica, and Ray are tree of the best, aren't they?
- No doubt.
- Think about the opening scenes of The Bicycle Thief. The hero is given a job, but he won't be able to take it unless he gets his bicycle out of hock. He goes home feeling sorry for himself. And there's his wife outside the building, lugging two buckets of water. All their poverty, all the struggles of this woman and his family are contained in those buckets. The husband is so wrapped up in his own troubles, he doesn't bother to help her until they're halfway of the door. And even then, he only takes one of the buckets, leaving her to carry the other. Everything we need to know about their marriage is given to us in those few seconds. Then they climb the stairs to their apartament, and the wife comes up with the idea to pawn their bed linens so they can redeem the bicycle. Remember how violently she kicks the bucket in the kitchen, remember how violently she opens the bureau drawer. Inanimate objects, human emotions. The wife sells the sheets, and after that we see one of the workers carry their little bundle to the shelves where pawned items are stored. At first, the shelves don't seem very high, but then the camera pulls back, and as the man starts climbing up, we see that they go on and on, all the way to the ceiling, and every shelf and cubby is crammed full of bundles identical to the one the man is now putting away and all of a sudden it looks as if every family in Rome has sold their bed linnens, that the entire city is in the same miserable state as the hero and his wife. In one shot, Grandpa. In one shot we're given a picture of a whole society living at the edge of disaster."

What a fucking joke!

'I'm sick of the food I eat, Balram. I'm sick of the life I lead. We rich people, we've lost our way, Balram. I want to be a simple man like you, Balram.'
'Yes, sir.'
We walked outside, and I led him across the road and into a tea shop.
'Order for us, Balram. Order the commoners' food.'
I ordered okra, cauliflower, radish, spinach, and dhal.
Enough to feed a whole family, or one rich man.
He ate and burped and ate some more.
'This food is fantastic. And just twenty-five rupees! You people eat so well!'
When he was done, I ordered him a lassi, and when he took the first sip, he smiled. 'I like eating your kind of food!'
I smiled and thought, I like eating your kind of food to.

Carbones

Vote With Your Gum

NYC is one of the dirtiest cities in United States and all the time people spit carelessly their chewing gums on the street. Two weeks before the presidential election you can now do something useful with your tasteless gum and stick it on the face of the political candidate, who you don’t wanna see in the White House for the next four years. So far more than 50 posters are taped in busy hot spots all over New York City which shouldn’t only make the city a bit cleaner but also give a preview on how New Yorkers will vote on the 04th of November.

Airborne Toxic Event

""Squadroms of UFOs will invade Disney World and Cape Canaveral. In a startling twist, the attack will be revealed as a demonstration of the folly of the war, leading to a nuclear test-ban treaty between U.S. and Russia.
"The ghost of Elvis Presley will be seen taking lonely walks at dawn around Graceland, his musical mansion.
"A Japanese consortium will buy Air Force One and turn it into a luxury flying condominium with midair refueling privilegies and air-to-surface missile capability.
"Bigfoot will appear dramatically at a campsite in the rugged and scenic Pacific Northwest. The hairy, upright man-beast, who stands eight feet tall and may be evolution's missing link, will gently wellcome tourists to gather around him, revealing himself to be an apostle of peace.
"UFOs will raise the lost city of Atlantis from its watery grave in the Caribbean by telekinetic means and the help of powerful cables with properties not known in earthlike materials. The result will be a 'city of peace' where money and passports are totally unknown.
"The spirit of Lyndon B. Johnson will contact CBS executives to arrange an interview on live TV in order to defend itself against charges made in recent books."

What were we running towards?

"What were we running towards? I don't think any of us would ever know fully. But superficially the answer was, a balloon. Not the nominal space that encloses a cartoon character's speech or thought, or, by analogy, the kind that's driven by mere hot air. It was an enormous balloon filled with helium, that elemental gas forged by hydrogen in the nuclear furnace of the stars, first step along the way in the generation of multiplicity and variety of matter in the universe, including ourselves and all our thoughts.
We were running towards a catastrophe, which itself was a kind of furnace in whose heat identities and fates would buckle into new shapes. At the base of the balloon was a basket in which there was a boy, and by the basket, clinging to a rope, was a man in need of help."

She decided she'd slept in the car.

"But my father was Alfie, my mother was Isadora. I was unnaturally psychic in my teens, I made a boy fall off his bike and I burned down a whole school. My mother was crazy; she was in love with God. There I was at the altar about to marry someone else when my boyfriend hammered on the church glass at the back and we eloped together on a bus. My mother was furious. She'd slept with him too. The devil got me pregnant and a satanic sect made me go through with it. The I fell in with a couple of outlaws and did me some talking to the sun. I said I didn't like the way he got things done. I had sex on the back of the old closing cinema. I used butter in Paris, I has a farm in Africa. I took off my clothes on the window of an apartament building and distracted the two police inspectors from watching for the madman on the roof who was trying to shoot the priest. I fell for an Italian. It was his moves on the dancefloor that did it. I knew what love meant. It meant never having to say you're sorry. It meant the man who drove the taxi would kill the presidential candidate, or the pimp. It was soft as an easy chair. It happened so fast. I had my legs bitten off by the shark. I stabbed the kidnapper, but so did everybody else, it wasn't just me, in the Orient Express ...

The kinematograph. The eidoloscope. The galloping tintypes. The silver screen. The flicks. The pictures. Up rose the smoke. Misty watercolour memories.
But it's all in the game and the way you play the game, you know. I was born free, I've had the time of my life and for all we know I'm going to live for ever."

Crap car

"In 1937 the arrest of the renowned aircraft designer Tupolev, on suspicion of sabotage, shocked the world of aviation. He was imprisoned not in the gulag but in his on institute in Moscow, along with his entire design team, and forced to continue his work under conditions of slavery. They slept in dormitories under armed guard, but were fed the finest meat and plenty of fish, for it was believed the brain needed good nourishment in order to perform. For an hour or so each day, the engineers were allowed into a caged enclosure on the roof of the institute fo recreation. From here they could sometimes watch the aeroplanes they had designed wheeling in the sky high above them."

First Love, Last Rites

"Not the watching kind, I was never a watcher, I had no interest in spotting and tracking and classifying, all that would have beyond me, and would had bored me, besides; no, I could hardly distinguish one species from another, and knew little and cared less about their history or habits. I could find their nests, though, that was my specialty. It was a matter of patience, alertness, quickness of eye, and something else, a capacity to be at one with the tiny creatures I was tracking to their lairs. A savant whose name for the moment I forget has posited as a refutation of something or another the assertion that it is impossible for a human being to imagine fully what it would be like to be a bat. I take this point in general, but I believe I could have given him a fair account of such creaturehood when a I was young and still part animal myself.

I was not cruel, I would not kill a bird or steal its eggs, certainly not. What drove me was curiosity, the simple passion to know something of the secrets of other, alien lives."

Siben zwei eins vier drei

And all cry, Hector! Hector's dead! O Hector!
